About me

I studied (1996-2001) and taught (2001-2019) German at the Kyiv National Linguistic University (Ukraine). I did an internship at the Technical University of Dresden (1999-2000), the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (2006-2007; 2011-2012), the Schwäbisch-Gmünd Pedagogical University (2010). 2009 I defended my doctoral thesis "German consonants in spontaneous speech: structural and functional aspects (experimental-phonetic research)". My strong suit is training in phonetics and consecutive translation.

I am sure Olek can be a great teacher for any type of student, be it beginners or those who learn consecutive translations, but on our classes we focus on pronunciation. In this respect, he can offer a truly university-level support and I feel that my German has improved considerably. Imagine my surprise when on the first lesson, without any special heads up, he was able to list the special points of difficulty for Slavic speakers of German, which is exactly what I needed. Specialists of this kind are rare to find. He can hear it perfectly what’s wrong with your pronunciation and guide you through to improve it, while most teachers, be it native speakers or not, are mostly deaf to such subtleties, are not trained to perceive them. He is knowledgeable, dedicated and does his part of the deal conscientiously. The only minus you must accept when taking classes with Olek is relatively low availability, at least at the moment when I write it.

Oleksandr is an amazing teacher! I'm currently on a B1 book. The class structure is great, and reflects his background as an actual teacher. We usually start with some conversation practice about recent events since the previous class, and right off the bat I get useful feedback on grammar, expressions and new words. Then we delve into the book, which includes discussing different themes depending on the chapter, as well as regular exercises (including listening). By the end of the class, Oleksandr asks if there are any open questions I still have before closing so I get a final chance to tackle anything still on my mind. I highly recommend him as a teacher to anyone learning German, especially if you already have a decent enough understanding that all of the lesson can be in the target language (e.g. meaning of words, explanations, etc.).
